ST. SOPHIA GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL IN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA. BUILT IN 1954

THE HISTORY
This beautiful St. Sophia Greek Orthodox cathedral was built in 1952. When Greek brothers Charles, Spyros, and George Skouras were striving to make it in Hollywood, Charles made a vow (“tama” in Greek) to God that he would build the most majestic cathedral if God would grant him success in show business. Charles became head of Fox West Coast and kept his word by becoming the major benefactor building the Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Los Angeles.
The late Telly Savalas and many other successful Greek Americans loved and attended the beautiful cathedral of Orthodox worship. Jennifer Aniston (Anastasakis) was even baptized by her late legendary Godfather Telly Savalas at St. Sophia’s. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson attend the church, and post on their social media during Orthodox Easter.

The Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral represents the “Holy Wisdom of God” and the architecture and design was influenced by Agia Sophia of Constantinople which has now been converted to a mosque in modern day Istanbul.

Many celebrities are patrons of the St. Sophia Greek Orthodox cathedral in LA and throughout the last few decades, including George Chakiris, the late legendary Telly Savalas, Rita Wilson and husband Tom Hanks (who always attend Easter) Maria Menounos, Melina Kanakaredes, Arianna Huffington, Costas Mandylor, Angelo Tsarouchas, and Nia Vardalos.
