Greeks have always been leaders and innovators in the world of Medicine from the days of Galen, Dioscorides, Herodicus, and Hippocrates. The World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) has honoured Greek Dr. Anargyros D. Mariolis with the ‘World Family Doctor Award for 2021’, an honorary distinction of international appeal which is awarded every 2 years to doctors from all over the world. This is the second award Dr. Mariolis has received since being named ‘Best Doctor in Europe in 2019’.
The award is given to a family doctor who is a holistic, human-centered, high-quality care provider, as well as an informed decision-maker, multidisciplinary communicator, and a community leader with administrative skills. This year’s prize honours his commitment, which includes work in both urban and rural areas of Greece, such as Mani.
“Ideas and work coexist in this distinction. Looking daily through the window of patients, who are now illuminated by this Award, the need for new human values arises. We must all work hard and decisively to paint a brighter sun all over the world, which will spread its warmth everywhere, for the Primary Health Care sector and the family doctor.” responded Dr Mariolis to the honour.
Dr. Mariolis is the Director of the Areopolis Health Centre and a Doctor of the Medical School at the University of Athens. Moreover, Dr. Mariolis was also named the ‘Best Family Doctor in Europe’ for 2019, and since September 2020 has been a member of the Committee of Experts of the Ministry of Health.
