The famous and loved Greek Laiko singer, Vassilis Karras, passed away at the age of 70 on December 24, 2023. According to media reports by cnn.gr, and many other media outlets, Vassilis Karras died shortly after 5:00 pm (Greece time) on Sunday, December 24. Vassilis Karras was battling Cancer for several years and had lost over 90 pounds. Media outlets have reported he had coronavirus and was being treated at the Diavalkaniko Hospital in Thessaloniki.
Vasilis Karras was born with the real name Vasilios Kesoglides, he was born on November 12, 1953 in Kokkinochori, Kavala. He was a proud Greek with Pontian roots. He has two siblings, Damianos and Anastasia. When he was 10 he moved with his family to Thessaloniki. In 1969, at the age of 16, Vassilis Karras made his first appearance at the nightclub “Prosfygas” in Evosmos, Thessaloniki. At the same time, he worked as a car mechanic, his second great love after singing. He always dreamt of becoming a singer and paid to produce his first albums.
He collaborated with many famous Greek composers and lyricists, such as Dimitris Rakitzis, Foivos, Giorgos Theofanous, Alekos Chrysovergis and Spyros Giatras, Evi Droutsa, Panos Falaras, Christos Dantis, Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Ilias Filippou, Michalis Hatzigiannis, Christos Nikolopoulos, and many others.
Karras did duets with many Greek singers such as Marianthi Kefala, Pyx Lax, Konstantina, Angela Dimitriou, Tolis Voskopoulos, Nikos Zoidakis, Kaiti Garbi, Despina Vandi, Elli Kokkinou, Irini Merkouri, Paola, and the late loved Pantelis Pantelidis.
Vassilis Karras was also a composer and lyricist and had written songs for many singers in Greece. May his memory be eternal. We thank you Mr. Karras for all the amazing music and memories we will forever remember you by. We are sure he is singing a duet in heaven with Pantelidis. God rest his soul.
