Get the ouzo ready! The 3rd installment of the My Big Fat Greek Wedding movie franchise is coming to theaters on September 8, 2023! The film was shot on location in Greece (from Athens to Corfu), and will focus on the family fulfilling the last wish of late father, Gus Portokalos. Gus wanted them to visit his village in the beautiful Mediterranean. The loud Greek family will travel to Greece for a heartwarming and hilarious trip full of love, twists, and some surprise turns.
The first-ever trailer for “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” the most recent installment in the romantic comedy series about cultural clashing, true love, bundt cakes, and the many uses for Windex, was shown to CinemaCon attendees. The third instalment follows the Portokalos family as they reunite for a trip to Greece.
Here’s a sneak peek of the opening scene for MBFGW 3 from the CinemaCon trailer: “A lot has happened since my big fat Greek wedding,” Nia Vardalos’ character says in a voice over. “My father passed away, and his last wish was for us to visit his childhood village in Greece and reconnect with our roots. So, we’re having a reunion.”
The movie trailer begins as the Portokalos family packs their bags and travels overseas to Greece to find the friends and cousins of Toula’s late father Gus. There’s plenty of souvlaki, day drinking, and romance to keep the family going. “This is one reunion we’ll never forget,” Toula says.
Ben Pearson from SlashFilm went to CinemaCon and reported that the mood is similar to the previous two movies, with beautiful scenery and some “Mamma Mia” vibes as well. The sneak footage ended with a joke between Nia’s character and her mother as Vardalos tells her mom, “I can’t really day drink like this.” Her mother, played by Lainie Kazan responds, “Don’t worry, a lady is never drunk!”
The sneak peek footage at CinemaCon also shows Aunt Voula, played by Andrea Martin, up to her usual antics, making sure everyone is eating, and cracking more jokes at Ian being vegetarian. Nia Vardalos wrote and directed the 3rd film, which opens in theaters on Sept. 8. She stars alongside returning cast members: John Corbett, Louis Mandylor, Elena Kampouris, Gia Carides, Lainie Kazan, Maria Vacratsis, Andrea Martin, Joey Fatone, and more.
